FILM SCREENING: TODAY at 1:00 p.m., the Ukrainian American Veterans will be showing the documentary film “Recovery Room” in our Church Hall. The film tells the story of the impact of the current war in Ukraine and the response by Ukrainians around the world. Fliers with more information are located in the vestibule of our Church. Please take one and reserve the date for viewing this award winning film. Thank you.

St. Michael’s Day will be celebrated on November 11th. On this day we will have only one (1) Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. After the Divine Liturgy, we will have dinner and a short program. All parishioners are cordially invited to this celebration. Tickets are available through Miss Luba Dubno and are $25.00 for adults, $10.00 for youth between 14 – 18, free for Ridna Shkola students, altar boys and children under 12. We will be running a raffle. If you would like to donate any items to be raffled, please bring them to our church hall on Sundays before our Feast Day. Also we ask for donations for dessert.

The Stamford Eparchy is hosting an event for children on September 29, “Children United in Prayer.”

Sunday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Read: Galatians 2:16-20; Mark 8:34-9:1

The first sticheron of the Feast of the Holy Cross tells us, “By this Cross …. In his mercy (Christ) clothed us with beauty and made us worthy of heaven.” This is confirmed in the Hymn of Light from Matins: “The Cross is the beauty of the Church.” How can this be? For the Cross is ugly torture, and the Prophet Isaiah foretells of the Messiah:

“See, my servant shall prosper, he shall be raised high and greatly exalted. Even as many were amazed at him— so marred were his features, beyond that of mortals his appearance, beyond that of human beings. He had no majestic bearing to catch our eye, no beauty to draw us to him. He was spurned and avoided by men, a man of suffering, knowing pain, like one from whom you turn your face, spurned, and we held him in no esteem” (Isaiah 52:13-14; 53:2-3).

One is reminded of St. Paul, “For you know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that for your sake he became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). We might re-phrase: “In his ugliness, we have all been made beautiful.”

Where is the beauty of the Cross? It is in the holiness of Jesus, who died that the Kingdom of God – life, love, mercy, wisdom – might be established in the world. We are called to “take up the cross,” which means uniting ourselves with Christ in love that the truth and wisdom and the glory of God might shine forth. Today, therefore, St. Paul writes, “I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me” (Galatians 2:19-20).

ASLEEP IN THE LORD:  John Chalupa fell asleep in the Lord on September 4, with his loving family by his side. Please pray for the repose of his soul. May his memory be eternal.

SESTRECHI: The regular monthly meeting will be held on TODAY, after the 9:00 a.m. Divine Liturgy. The meeting will be held today in the church hall classroom.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: The Blessed Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Ukrainian Council will hold its next regular meeting on Monday October 1, at 7:00 p.m. in the church hall. All men of the parish are invited to attend.

The Life-Giving Cross

“… let us venerate the wood of Your cross, O friend of men, because on it You have been nailed, Life of all. You opened heaven, O Savior, to the thief who had faith in You; he was worthy of bliss because he confessed to You: remember me, Lord… we have all sinned, for Your love compassion do not despise us.”

Today we sing, We bow to your Cross, O Lord, and we glorify your holy resurrection!!!

St. John Chrysostom fell asleep in the Lord

Today, the Church remembers that on September 14, 407, St. John Chrysostom fell asleep in the Lord.

We pray his Divine Liturgy for much of the liturgical year and read his sermons.

Sloatsburg sisters to sell property

The religious congregation of Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate are looking to sell their 40 acre property was announced. (click on the highlighted words for the article.)

The Sisters are looking for $22 million for the estate to help them ease into the future with no financial worries and to underwrite their senior living ministry. With no vocations there is no need to have retain the estate.

A sad turn of events: the property would be ideal for a monastery of men to pray and work for all the Byzantine Churches in the North America.
