On Sunday, August 25, 2019 we will be having a ceremony in observance of the 28th Anniversary of Ukrainian Independence. This will take place after the 2nd Divine Liturgy beside the statue of the Blessed Virgin. Coffee and cake will be served in the church hall after the ceremony.

We will make pyrohy for the Ukrainian Festival in Stamford on Saturday, September 7th. Our next pyrohy project for regular orders will be September 14th. Please come and help. See Walter Ushchak for more information.

The Immaculate Conception Society (Sestretsi) is cordially inviting all St. Michael’s parishioners and friends to attend its yearly Luncheon to be held on Sunday, October 6, 12:00 noon, at our parish church hall. Come to enjoy good food, deserts and the company of parishioners and friends. Tickets are $20.00 for adults and free admission to those under the age of 18. We have for sale frozen pierogies (varenyky) 2 dozen $14.00, cabbage and sausage (kapusta and kovbasa) $10.00. You can buy after each Divine Liturgy.

The final festival meeting of the CT State Ukrainian Day Committee will be held on Monday, August 26, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be hosted by: St. Basil’s Seminary, 195 Glenbrook Road, Stamford, CT 06902. Refreshments will be served promptly at 7 p.m.

Dormition Blessing of Flowers and Herbs 2019

Father Paul Luniw served the Divine Liturgy and blessed flowers and herbs for the Dormition Feast. Father Stepan did similarly at the morning Liturgy.

“While she lived on this earth,, Mary could only be close to a few people. Being in God, who is close to us, actually, “within” all of us, Mary shares in this closeness of God. Being in God and with God, she is close to each one of us, knows our hearts, can hear our prayers, can help us with her motherly kindness and has been given to us, as the Lord said, precisely as a “mother” to whom we can turn at every moment.” Benedict XVI

Dormition Liturgies 2019

On Thursday, August 15, the Dormition of our most Holy Lady and the Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary, a holy of LOVE, the Divine Liturgy will be served at:

~The 10am Liturgy in Ukrainian will be served by Fr. Stepan Yanovsky

~The 7pm Liturgy in English will be served by Fr. Paul Luniw

At both Liturgies Father will bless herbs and flowers in honor of the Dormition.

Holy Prophet Micah

Micah prophesied between 750 and 687 bc. He was a contemporary of Amos and Isaiah.

Micah’s words were an indictment against the rich, the avaricious money lenders, swindling merchants, families divided by rivalry, and all petty tyrants and bureaucrats, whether dressed as judges or rulers, priests or prophets. They were the very antithesis of the divine ideal he preached, namely, “to deal justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with God.”

Failure to do these things, Micah warned, will bring punishment. He specified the destruction of Samaria and the fall of Jerusalem, but he also held out a hope for the faithful remnant. He described the birth of a peaceful king who will pasture the flock of the Lord. Micah foretold that this event would take place in Bethlehem of Ephratah, which was known as “the least of the clans of Judah.” (NS)

Orest Tadey (Tom) Dubno fell asleep in the Lord

On Wednesday, August 7, Orest Tadey (Tom) Dubno fell asleep in the Lord.

Let us hold Orest in prayer and for the consolation of his daughter and his family. May the Holy Theotokos assist him before the Throne of Grace. May Orest’s memory be eternal.

Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Sunday from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. and are invited to attend a Funeral Liturgy in St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 569 George St., New Haven Monday morning at 10:00. Panachida service in the funeral home Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. Interment in East Side Cemetery, Woodbridge, CT.

Flowers and herbs: It is customary to bring flowers and herbs to Church on the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. The Liturgy will be served on August 15th at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. The flowers and herbs will be blessed at the end of the Divine Liturgy. Why flowers and herbs? Holy Tradition reveals to us that the Apostles, with the exception of St. Thomas, were transported mystically to Jerusalem in order to be with Mary, the Mother of God –the Theotokos– as she was about to repose, and to be present at her burial. When the Apostle Thomas arrived the next day, the Apostles opened the tomb so that he could pay her reverence. The opened tomb revealed the body of the Virgin was missing, and filled with herbs and flowers interpreted as the sweet fragrance of Paradise. The faithful see this a certain sign of Mary’s purity and holiness.

Transfiguration of the Lord and blessing of grapes

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy for the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Father Iura blessed grapes, harvested fruits and vegetables and honey.

According to the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches, apart from me you can do nothing.” Grapes connect us to the wine changed in the Blood of Christ at the Liturgy, the fruits and vegetables return to the Lord the blessings He’s bestowed on us, and honey reminds of the sweetness of the Beauty of God.

As close followers (disciples) of Jesus Christ we know we don’t give ourselves anything; everything we have is a gift. Therefore, we say we depend on God for everything in our lives. It was same recognition that Moses had and taught the people of Israel to offer their first and finest harvest back to the Lord.
