The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Branch 108 New Haven and St. Michael Parish will be preparing a Prosphora, a traditional Ukrainian Christmas meal, on Sunday, January 27, TODAY, after the only one Divine Liturgy at 10:30. Tickets are $20.00 for adults, free for students Ridna Shkola and altar boys. We will be running a raffle. Please donate items for raffle and cakes for desert. Tickets are on sale in the church hall every Sunday after both Divine Liturgies. You can buy tickets from Luba Dubno or members of UWLA Branch 108.

STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL: The next Stewardship Council meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday, February 4, in the Holy Name Room. All council members and organization representatives are invited: Natalie Chermak, Nataliya Lyalka, Andrew Bamber, Anna Salemme, Walter Ushchak, Chris Komondy, Halya Lodynsky, Marybeth Gawron, Christine Melnyk, Myron Melnyk, Maria Antonyshyn,  Mary Muryn, Carl Harvey and Paul Zalonski.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: The next meeting of Knights of Columbus Blessed Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Ukrainian Council will resume on February 4, 7:00 p.m. in the Holy Name Room. All men of the parish are invited to attend.

The organizational meeting of the newly formed Facilities Maintenance Team of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church took place on Friday evening, January 18th. The schedule of work sessions was also established for the entire year so that plans can be developed for doing all the projects and arrangements made for the purchase of required supplies and equipment.

Once the projects have been determined and prioritized, the group will spend the rest of this “meeting” beginning to work on the first project. The usual time frame for the work sessions will run from 6:30 to about 9:30 p.m. There will be occasions when it is necessary to work later than 9:30 to complete some of the projects.

All parishioners who would like to become part of the team should leave your contact information with Fr. Iura after the Divine Liturgy. Forms for providing your contact information can be found in the vestibule of the church.

Annual Financial Statement: This year the appearance of our Annual Financial Statement is changing. Individual donations listed by envelope number will no longer be printed and the remainder of the statement is being streamlined. The result is a shorter, more concise statement which more closely reflects the statements of the other churches in our diocese.

Individual parishioner donations will be prepared upon request by filling out the form which will accompany the statement.

Awakenings —Adult Faith Formation

The Freedom of the Creator

God realizes his plan for the creation of the world through his Word: “Let there be light…let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters” (Gen 1:3,6). This creative Word reveals himself in Holy Scripture as the Son of God, begotten of the Father: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation … he is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Col 1:15-17) (Christ Our Pascha, 104).

The Troparion and Kontakion, Our Holy Father Gregory the Theologian, Archbishop of Constantinople Feast Day on January 25th):

Like a shepherd’s flute, O Father Gregory, your theology vanquished the trumpets of orators, for searching the depths of the spirit, beauty of speech was increased in you. Pray Christ God that our souls may be saved.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever, Amen.

Prosphora 2019 rescheduled

Christ is born!

Father Iura has decided in consultation with the various groups of the parish, to reschedule the 2019 Prosphora from this Sunday to next Sunday, January 27. The weather forecast for this Sunday is said to be difficult for the party.

The Divine Liturgy for Sunday, January 20 remains at 10:30 a.m.

The Divine Liturgy for Sunday January 27 will be at 10:30 a.m.

Awakenings —Adult Faith Formation

“Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you,” 1 Peter 3:15.

Adult Faith Formation at St Michael’s strives to create an environment and opportunities that foster adult learning, addressing the varied dimensions of Byzantine Catholic life and the spiritual life. Our Byzantine tradition is rich and we aim to deepen our understanding so as to inform the way we live. As a result of the leadership of His Beatitude, Patriarch Sviatoslav from his letter that we heard last week, we are aiming to address the hopes of the Patriarch to generate a new appreciation for the beauty of the Byzantine tradition of faith that we have inherited. Beginning now, we will offer a word from the Catechism of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Christ Our Pascha  and a word from one of the Fathers of the Church on a weekly basis. It is our hope that these words will awaken a new hope in the promises of our Savior, Jesus Christ, for communion with the Holy Trinity.

THEOPHANY OF OUR LORD: At Your baptism in the Jordan River, O Lord, the worship of the Trinity was proclaimed: the voice of the Father bore witness to You by calling You “My beloved Son.” The Spirit, in the form of a dove confirmed the truth of this declaration. O Christ-God, manifested Light of the world, glory to You.

Thus we shall put an end to the civil conflict in our own midst. Let us be at peace with one another, “forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you,” and showing mercy to each other out of mutual love, just as Christ, solely for love of us, had mercy on us and for our sake came down to us. Then, recalled from the sinful fall through His help and grace, and lifted high above this world by virtues, we may have our citizenship in heavenly places, whence also we wait for our hope, redemption from corruption and enjoyment of celestial and eternal blessings as children of the Heavenly Father.”

Divine Liturgy on January 1, New Year’s Day

Christ is born!

“O Jesus enthroned on high together with Your eternal Father and divine Spirit ….”  (Troparion of the Circumcision)

Divine Liturgy on January 1, New Year’s Day. On Tuesday, we liturgically remember that 8 days ago we celebrated Christmas. Today according to Jewish custom, we recall Jesus underwent the Circumcision.

It is also the feast day of Our Father Among the Saints, Basil the Great, Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia. Father Iura will use the Eucharistic prayers of St. Basil.

Following the Divine Liturgy we will have some champagne in the church hall; please bring something sweet to eat to celebrate the —New Year’s Day 2019!

SESTRECHI will be enjoying our winter recess during the months of January and February 2019. The next regularly scheduled monthly meeting will be on March 10, 2019. The meeting will be held in the church hall classroom after the 9:00 Divine Liturgy.

With the upcoming Holidays of Christmas, New Year and Epiphany our best wishes to our bishop, His Excellency Bishop Paul Chomnycky our Parishioners, Trustees, Choir Director  and members of the church choir, Altar Boys, Knights of Columbus members, Sestretsi members, all Ukrainian and American Organizations in our parish, all benefactors and  members of our parish that every day donate their time, work and money for good of our Church. May the new born Jesus Christ Bless our Parish.

PHILIP’S FAST, ПИЛИПІВКА, the period of spiritual preparation for the celebration of the Nativity/Theophany continues until Monday evening. Christmas eve is a day of abstinence (meat may not be eaten).

The annual St. Nicholas pageant will be held on TODAY (12/23) after the 2nd Divine Liturgy. All children are invited to meet with St. Nicholas on this joyous occasion.
